Metrology Engineer

New Berlin Plastics is a recognized leader in custom plastic injection molding in Southeastern Wisconsin. We have an opportunity for a Metrology Engineer to join our project launch team and help us to better serve our growing customer base.

The Metrology Engineer participates primarily as a member of the Product Launch Team. Initially participating in the Design for Manufacturing (DFM) activity to evaluate part prints and specifications with the objective of identifying potential metrology issues.

The role is responsible for the planning and execution of metrology activities associated with new and existing products including Initial Sample Inspection Report (ISIR), Gage R&R, Capability Studies, inputs for fixture design, etc.

Secondary responsibilities include participating in the continual improvement of the Quality Laboratory operations such as training and development of Quality Auditors, reviewing and simplifying inspection plans for new and existing products, and identifying opportunities to increase Quality Laboratory capabilities and throughput. Manage the Gage Calibration process by ensuring frequency and means of calibration are appropriate.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in DFM activities evaluating part prints, and specifications to identify potential metrology issues and provide recommendations
  • Identify opportunities to increase metrology output through planning and staging activities in a manner that eliminates waiting waste
  • Manage outsourced metrology activities through the identification of approved sources and working with purchasing and other team members to minimize disruption to launch plans and manage costs
  • Identify opportunities for improvement of the Quality of Laboratory function and equipment
  • Assist in the development of training plans for QA Auditors, and participate in their training
  • Work with Quality Auditors and Engineers to modify Inspection Plans in order to reduce risk, waste, and complexity
  • Manage gage calibration process to ensure that gages, fixtures, and other metrology equipment are calibrated appropriately

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related curriculum required or equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job
  • 5 Years of the progressive development of Metrology Skills in a manufacturing setting
  • Extensive knowledge of metrology equipment, software (preferably Calypso), and current measurement techniques
  • Knowledge 3D CAD modeling
  • Extensive understanding of GD&T

Skills that will make you stand out (a plus):

  • Experience with light scanner/Roamer Arm
  • Proficiency in Calypso and PolyWorks software
  • Understanding of APQP
  • Experience with Zeiss CMM
  • Injection Molding Experience
